The application of 3R in cosmetics packaging

Cosmetic industry is one important sector in the global economy and is expected to grow in the next years. The need to achieve Sustainable Development (SD) is growing as well, and cosmetic companies are looking for innovative and sustainable solutions aimed at reducing their negative environmental, economic and social impacts. The interest in this field also regards the scientific community which investigates and proposes Circular Economy (CE) as a paradigm which could support companies in the transition towards a sustainable future.

The circular economy is considered one of the main pillar of sustainability. The circular economy is governed by 3Rs, namely Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, which are the major strategies for eco-friendly process.

Both circular economy and 3Rs concept are interchangeable in waste management process. In 3Rs concept, the word Reduction has much wider scope and emphasis in waste reduction at various sequences of production process and different stages of consumption. The quantity of waste generated in the industry could be minimized through planning and strategic policies. Eco-friendly material is the need and it ensures that the products could be utilized for reengineering or to produce components of new material in every production cycle.

Recycling/upcycling also plays a major role in the circular economy interconnecting environmental and social dimensions.

Refuse i.e. refrain from using materials, substances or products which cannot be reused, repaired or recycled or which have a negative impact on the environment or on human health and life. Reduce, i.e. reduce the usage of renewable and non-renewable resources, materials, substances or products through the application of appropriate technological, logistical or economic measures. Reuse i.e. the re-use of materials, raw materials or products which instead of becoming waste in one production or service process become raw material for another, also the use of materials, raw materials or products for new functions when they are no longer applicable in their current form. Recover i.e. to extend the life cycle of a product by allowing it to be repaired, refreshed or improved in terms of aesthetics, or to create comprehensive systems promoting the repair of products, e.g. by introducing technology standards, offering variable parts, repair work, or making the product repairable; concerning advanced technologies for the regeneration of products or the creation of systems promoting the repair and regeneration of products. Recycle, i.e. if a product, material or substance cannot be reused or repaired/regenerated and the resulting waste cannot be reused or lose its waste status. Such waste, according to the principle, should be sent for reprocessing to be reused for its original purpose or transformed into new materials and products. Rethink (think what you can do better) i.e. plan and design the measures to be taken in the case of production methods, services and raw materials and materials that cause or are likely to cause waste or environmental impacts, in order to prevent or significantly reduce waste or to reduce its negative impacts on human life and health and on the environment.
